Thirteen locally headquartered credit unions from California and Nevada have ranked on S&P Global Market Intelligence’s annual list of top 100 U.S. “best performing” credit unions for 2025.
With 10 from California and three from Nevada, leading the charge for the two-state region is Sacramento Credit Union — which took the No. 4 spot nationally. All top performers include:
“California led the entire nation with 10 total credit unions in the top 100, followed closely by Michigan and New York with eight each,” according to the S&P Global Market Intelligence report.
It states that while West Coast institutions showed significant strength, the No. 1 spot nationally went to Savannah, Georgia-based Workmen’s Circle Credit Union. Rising from 10th place in 2024, the credit union outperformed the industry median in all six ranking metrics. Its return on average assets (ROAA) rose 85 basis points to 1.95 percent, and its shares-to-deposits per member ratio of $64,939 was the second highest in the top 100. Furthermore, Workmen’s Circle maintained perfect credit quality, ending the year with 0.00 percent delinquent loans and net charge-offs.
Oregon-based Cascade Community Federal Credit Union climbed to second place (up from third in 2024), reporting an ROAA of 2.40 percent and member growth of 4.8 percent — more than double the top 100 median. Taking the third spot was East Aurora, New York-based Moog Employees Federal Credit Union, which shared a 0.00 percent net charge-off ratio with Workmen’s Circle and posted a robust net worth ratio of 26.40 percent.
The report also says the 2025 list saw significant movement among established players. Seventy-five of the top 100 performers from 2024 managed to retain their spots. However, the previous year’s leader, Olympia, Washington-based WCLA Credit Union, fell to No. 25 following a rise in loan delinquency to 1.89 percent and a decline in member growth.
The nation’s largest credit union by assets, Vienna, Virginia-based Navy Federal Credit Union, saw its ranking drop to No. 1,293 in 2025 from No. 1,078 the year prior. While its net charge-off ratio of 2.34 percent was lower than its 2024 performance, it remained significantly higher than the top 100 median of 0.12 percent.
Outside of the California-Nevada lead, Michigan’s top performer was Sovita Credit Union (Flint), ranking 32nd. In New York, following Moog Employees Federal Credit Union, Utica Gas and Electric Employees Federal Credit Union (New Hartford) took the sixth spot nationally, rounding out the top performers in the 2025 analysis.
