Five credit unions across California and Nevada were recently celebrated for their commitment to member service, community involvement, and operational excellence. From sweeping local “Best Of” polls to earning prestigious five-star national rankings from Newsweek, these institutions are setting the standard for regional banking in 2026.
In Nevada, Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU) and WestStar Credit Union have solidified their positions as the premier financial partners for residents and businesses alike. GNCU was recently recognized with a second-place finish in the Northern Nevada Business Weekly Best in Business Awards, marking the second consecutive year the business community has honored the institution for its robust support of local organizations. The credit union has long emphasized its specialized Small Business team and tailored lending solutions designed to help local organizations grow, and this latest recognition serves as a testament to its commitment to serving Nevada’s business community.
In Southern Nevada, WestStar Credit Union dominated the 2025 Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Best of Las Vegas Awards, competing in North America’s largest “Best Of” contest which saw over 17 million votes cast. WestStar earned recognition in five distinct categories, taking home Silver awards for Best Mortgage Lender and Best Savings Account, while also securing Bronze awards for Best Credit Union, Best Finance Customer Service, and Best Credit Card Rewards. As a member-owned institution, WestStar’s success in these public-voted categories underscores its deep connection to the Las Vegas community and its ability to deliver high-quality financial products alongside exceptional service.
In California, two of the state’s largest credit unions have received significant national acclaim. San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) and SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union were both named to Newsweek’s prestigious list of America’s Best Regional Banks & Credit Unions 2026. SDCCU achieved a coveted five-star rating, the highest possible score in the study, which was conducted in partnership with Plant-A Insights Group. The ranking analyzed over 10,000 institutions based on financial health, operational performance, and more than two million online reviews. SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Campbell noted that the institution’s focus on the community and commitment to delivering excellent products has always been a guiding principle, making the five-star rating a point of extreme pride for the organization.
Similarly, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union earned its spot on the Newsweek list for the third consecutive year, ranking among the top 500 highest-scoring credit unions in the nation. SchoolsFirst FCU was recognized for its dedication to school employees and their families, rooted in its mission to deliver world-class personal service and financial well-being. The credit union’s inclusion was based on a massive independent study involving 140,000 customers who rated institutions on trust, satisfaction, and overall experience. As the largest credit union in California, SchoolsFirst FCU continues to deliver long-term value through responsible lending and ongoing investment in the communities it serves.
Completing the circle of excellence, CommonWealth Central Credit Union announced a triple-crown victory in the San Francisco Bay Area. On January 29, 2026, the credit union was named a Services category winner in three major community programs, including the Best of Morgan Hill for the ninth consecutive year, the Best of Silicon Valley for the second year in a row, and an inaugural win for the Best of Los Gatos. CommonWealth Central President and CEO Viktoria Earle said these awards are especially meaningful because they come directly from the people the credit union serves, reflecting the trust members place in the team. The recognition highlights the credit union’s personalized approach to financial well-being and its active role in supporting local families and businesses across the Silicon Valley region.
While these five credit unions serve diverse demographics — from educators in Orange County to small businesses in Reno — their recent accolades share a common thread of dedication to people over profits. By combining strong financial performance with community-focused initiatives, credit unions continue to prove they are the backbone of local economies in both states.
