Assemblymember Visits: Financial Wellness and Rural Support

Great Basin Federal Credit Union recently hosted Nevada Assemblymembers Erica Roth and Gregory Koenig for a series of meetings aimed at strengthening community partnerships and highlighting the role credit unions play in the state’s economic health.

The meetings provided a platform for credit union leaders to personally deliver Political Action Committee (PAC) checks and engage in discussions regarding financial literacy, underserved populations, and the needs of rural Nevadans.

Underserved Communities with Assemblymember Erica Roth

With Roth, the conversation focused on the social impact of the credit union’s initiatives. Roth, who represents District 24, expressed praise for the credit union’s financial literacy programming and its commitment to the community’s most vulnerable members.

A highlight of the discussion was Great Basin’s partnership with University of Nevada—Reno’s Pack Provisions, a student-run food pantry. As rising costs for food and gasoline continue to strain household budgets, the assemblymember offered to help amplify this initiative by sharing program information with her own community partners.

The assemblymember also explored new avenues for collaboration based on her previous community involvement. Given her history with the Northern Nevada Literacy Council, Roth requested access to the credit union’s financial education catalog to explore bringing workshops to their participants.

Rosh also highlighted a need for financial education within correctional facilities, suggesting that the credit union’s budgeting and foundational skills training could be life-changing for individuals re-entering the community.

Rural Nevada with Assemblymember Gregory Koenig

Leaders also spotlighted the credit union difference during a meeting with Koenig (District 38). The assemblymember traveled from Fallon to meet the Great Basin team at the Spanish Springs branch, where the discussion focused on the importance of maintaining a strong presence in Nevada’s rural corridors.

The meeting touched on shared connections in Churchill County, where the assemblymember serves the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe through his optometry practice. He found common ground with the credit union’s involvement in the Fallon Chamber of Commerce and local small business initiatives.

Koenig also noted his appreciation for Great Basin’s “Random Acts of Kindness” efforts and its consistent support of Fallon’s local events, reinforcing the alignment between legislative goals and credit union actions in supporting rural prosperity.

Visits like these are an opportunity to show state lawmakers how credit unions serve members every day.
