Meet the Member: 5 Questions with Assemblymember Rubio

  • What role have credit unions played in your community, and what impact have you seen firsthand?Credit unions have been trusted community partners that help families build financial stability through affordable services, financial education, and programs like our Young Legislators Mad Money, where we work together to teach students practical money management skills.
  • What inspired you to pursue public service, and what keeps you motivated today?I pursued public service to create opportunities for working families and underserved communities. As the daughter of immigrants and as a classroom teacher, I have experienced and seen firsthand the needs of my community.

Knowing the challenges my parents and I have endured and thrived through, helping and inspiring my community has been a top priority to me. I remain motivated by the chance to help people access the resources and tools they need to succeed; there will always be people to support and there will always be knowledge and experiences to share.

  • What community partnership or local initiative involving a credit union has impressed you recently?I cannot emphasize my appreciation and love for the credit unions’ partnership on our Young Legislators Mad Money workshop. This is one of my favorite immersive experiences we put on. This experience has a prolific impact. Not only do our young adults gain new skills and ways of understanding how to use money, pay bills and plan for their future, but they are armed with financial tools to distill to their friends and family members.
  • What opportunities do you see for credit unions to partner with government and community organizations to address challenges facing Californians?Credit unions are uniquely positioned to collaborate with government agencies, schools, and community organizations to expand financial literacy, increase access to affordable banking services, and support pathways to economic mobility. This is a recipe for success and deepened community development and growth.
  • What advice would you give to credit unions to tell their story to legislators?I always encourage making sure you take the time to network and meet with your elected officials; share your impact and your goals within the community and make the effort to develop that relationship. Both parties have unique perspectives that will foster success within the community.
