In a series of recent announcements, California Credit Union and its subsidiary, North Island Credit Union, have demonstrated a commitment to members and the communities they serve.
From expanding their physical footprint in Riverside County to providing financial lifelines during federal disruptions and empowering the next generation of leaders through scholarships, both credit unions are proving that being a member-owned cooperative means standing by people through every stage of life.
Recognizing the financial strain caused by the partial federal government shutdown, California Credit Union recently launched a comprehensive Member Relief Program. Designed to provide flexibility and ease the stress for federal employees whose pay has been disrupted, the initiative offers several vital resources:
“As a member-owned cooperative, our priority is to stand by our members when they need us most,” said President and CEO Steve O’Connell. “These relief programs are designed to provide flexibility and ensure our members have access to the support they need during this challenging time.”
While providing immediate relief to current members, the organization is also looking toward the future. North Island Credit Union recently celebrated the grand opening of its 12th branch, located at 39168 Winchester Road in Murrieta.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by local leaders and community partners, marked a triumphant return to Riverside County. The modern, full-service branch offers:
“Opening this branch is about more than expanding our footprint — it’s about building meaningful connections in a community we’re proud to serve,” noted O’Connell.
The credit union’s commitment extends beyond banking and into the classroom. For the sixth consecutive year, North Island Credit Union has partnered with the North County African American Women’s Association (NCAAWA) to offer four $1,000 scholarships to college-bound female students of African American descent.
Special consideration for the 2026 scholarships will be given to students pursuing degrees in education. Beyond financial aid, the partnership includes:
“We are proud to support programs that expand access to education and opportunity,” O’Connell said. “These initiatives reflect our shared commitment to empowering students with the knowledge they need to build a strong financial future.”
