Check fraud remains one of the fastest-growing financial crimes in the nation. To combat this threat, America’s Credit Unions and the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL), in partnership with America Saves, have launched a nationwide awareness campaign titled “Check Yourself: Stop Check Fraud Before it Starts.”
Running throughout the month of August, the month-long initiative provides practical guidance to help consumers better understand and protect themselves against financial fraud, while equipping credit unions with resources to educate their members and communities.
“Consumers shouldn’t have to worry about losing their hard-earned payments and benefits to fraudsters. With check fraud driving at least $16 billion in losses just last year, credit unions are raising awareness by partnering with America Saves to fight this growing trend and protect their members,” said Kathleen Coulombe, Chief Advocacy Officer at America’s Credit Unions. “Through a month-long campaign, we’re sharing resources to educate Americans on how to spot and stop check fraud. We’re also calling on Congress to advance legislative solutions like Rep. Young Kim’s STOP Payments Fraud Act to stop fraudsters. Consumers deserve peace of mind, and credit unions are trusted partners in protecting their financial wellbeing.”
The campaign breaks down complex security risks into four targeted weekly themes:
Credit unions across the country are encouraged to participate in the initiative. Sponsoring organizations have provided a full social media toolkit — including customizable newsletter articles, social graphics, educational videos, and blog posts — to help institutions amplify these critical messages locally.
