The Nevada State Legislature officially adjourned its 83rd Legislative Session this week. It began in February with Nevada’s Credit Unions hosting its Government Relations Rally (GRR), a legislative lobby-day dedicated to advocating for the industry in Carson City every other year.
GRR attendees focused on opposing duplicative artificial intelligence regulations and any efforts to undermine interchange, amplifying the unified credit union voice across the state.
The good news: both the artificial intelligence bill (Senate Bill 199) and proposed interchange-related efforts failed to advance.
Retailers in the state ultimately shifted their focus to Assembly Bill 500, a proposal to establish a regulatory framework for a payment bank. This effort also failed in the final days of the legislative session.
Credit union advocates also successfully championed Senate Bill 375, Nevada’s first meaningful state charter modernization in recent memory, which was signed into law last weekend. The bill would revise various provisions related to the governance, membership, oversight, reserves, and investments that govern state-chartered credit unions in Nevada, improving their board governance and member operations.
Additionally, Nevada’s credit unions helped defeat several harmful proposals, including Senate Bill 369, which would have held credit unions liable for elder financial abuse. Senate Bill 142 was also defeated, which sought to expand restrictions on garnishments (the bill was ultimately vetoed).
A full legislative recap will be shared soon with Nevada credit union leaders.
“Thank you to all who played a role in advocating for Nevada’s credit unions throughout the session,” said Robert Wilson, senior vice president of state government affairs for Nevada’s Credit Unions and the California Credit Union League.
