California credit union leaders recently met with former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra in Bakersfield, using the opportunity to discuss credit unions’ role in California communities, affordability, and the importance of a strong and competitive state charter.
The conversation highlighted the Cal State University (CSU) endowment initiative, established by California credit unions last year to support students pursuing careers in public service. Becerra, who previously welcomed CSU interns into his congressional office, applauded the initiative and its investment in California’s future leaders.
The discussion broadened to California’s economy and affordability. Becerra shared his perspective on the importance of long-term economic stability and creating greater continuity for businesses as part of addressing costs for Californians.
Credit union leaders also raised concerns about the number of institutions leaving California’s state charter and emphasized the importance of ensuring the charter remains strong and competitive. Becerra asked questions about the factors contributing to the trend and expressed support for California being in a position of strength.
The conversation provided another opportunity for California’s credit unions to educate leaders about the movement, demonstrate the impact credit unions have across the state, and elevate issues affecting their ability to serve members and communities.
