Local credit union leaders met this week with Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) at Wescom Financial’s headquarters in Pasadena, CA, where they discussed the political climate in Washington, D.C., the federal government shutdown, and the role credit unions are playing in his district during this period.
Sherman, a longtime champion of credit unions, holds a senior position on the House Financial Services Committee, serving as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Capital Markets. The congressman’s role gives him an important voice in shaping the legislative and regulatory environment for the financial services marketplace.
The discussion focused on the current federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, 2025. With Congress failing to pass budget appropriations legislation, the shutdown has stopped many government functions.
Sherman provided an update on negotiations between Democratic and Republican leadership on Capitol Hill. Credit union leaders in attendance noted the instability the shutdown creates for federal workers and the broader economy, discussing their commitment to supporting members who are federal employees.
Looking beyond the government shutdown, Sherman and credit union leaders also discussed regulatory matters that shape the financial services world, as well as the impact on local members. Credit unions were once again able to demonstrate how they actively meet the financial services and educational-literacy needs of the congressman’s constituents, providing first-hand accounts of members living, working, and doing business in California’s 32nd District.
Eight local credit unions were represented during the visit:
California’s Credit Unions would like to thank the congressman and his staff for the collaborative discussion as credit unions and Sherman continue serving constituents and members within his district.
