CUs Support Members & Communities After Chemical Emergency

Following the chemical tank emergency at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove, CA that triggered evacuations and threatened a possible explosion, local credit unions have been stepping up to provide relief to members and communities.

Overall, they have mobilized emergency loans, payment deferrals, direct community donations, and hardship assistance programs to support impacted members, residents, and credit union employees.

While the chemical tank crisis was recently resolved, the regional disruption from evacuations and temporary business closures left many local families facing financial stress.

Direct Relief on the Ground

Among the most impacted was Credit Union of Southern California, which identified more than 560 members residing in the original evacuation zone. The credit union took action, emailing affected members to offer emergency assistance loans of up to $5,000 per household at zero-percent interest for 12 months, with no payments due for the first 60 days. CU SoCal also offered immediate loan payment deferrals to eligible members with existing loans.

CU SoCal also coordinated with Garden Grove city officials to support community relief, culminating in a $10,000 donation to the Garden Grove Elks Lodge, which served as a housing shelter and provided supplies to displaced residents.

Nuvision Federal Credit Union also initiated outreach to impacted members, activating an emergency loan program featuring unsecured loans up to $5,000 with repayment periods stretching up to five years. This came alongside short-term personal relief loans of up to $500 at zero-percent interest for 12 months.

The credit union has also extended home equity lines of credit (HELOCs) and payment deferral options to help meet immediate financial needs.

Payment and Deferral Programs

Several credit unions introduced customized terms and payment relief to ease immediate burdens.

Southland Credit Union is offering special relief loans of up to $3,500. Under its program, the first payment is deferred for 90 days from the loan funding date, and the first three months of repayment require interest-only payments. Repayment terms are structured based on the loan size, offering 12 months for loans under $1,000, 18 months for loans between $1,001 and $2,000, and 24 months for loans from $2,001 to $3,500. Southland continues to monitor member needs in real-time to scale assistance as appropriate.

Orange County’s Credit Union has rolled out structured payment relief programs, including skip-a-pay options, short-term loan forbearance, and fee waivers for affected borrowers, alongside expedited access to emergency personal loans and hardship assistance.

Similarly, POPA Federal Credit Union is providing targeted payment relief options, including skip-a-pay, short-term loan forbearance, and fee waivers for its affected borrowers.

CalCom Federal Credit Union is extending assistance to any affected members through discounted small-dollar loans and fee-free auto-loan extensions.

Outreach and Resources

Credit unions are also leveraging digital outreach and community partnerships to guide members toward resources.

SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union and Orange County’s Credit Union are coordinating with Greenpath, a local financial wellness and resource-sharing service, to assist impacted individuals with housing support and emergency hardship counseling.

Institutions like Santa Ana Federal Credit Union and Credit Union of Southern California have deployed email campaigns to ensure members in affected ZIP codes are aware of resources and disaster relief programs.

For members needing direct support, Comunidad Latina Federal Credit Union stepped up by preparing to offer volunteer assistance where needed, alongside small-dollar donations directly to members facing immediate needs.

Meanwhile, Golden 1 Credit Union focused its efforts on supporting members in need on an individual, case-by-case basis.

Emergency Readiness and Regional Support

For some local institutions, disaster preparedness is a year-round commitment.

Aerospace Federal Credit Union maintains a permanent, year-round emergency assistance portal on its website. The credit union previously activated the program during crises but chose to make it permanently accessible due to constant local and regional emergencies.

Similarly, while CAHP Credit Union, California Coast Credit Union and Water and Power Community Credit Union have not yet seen a high volume of direct inquiries from the Garden Grove area, they stand prepared with crisis response efforts accessible to members impacted by the disaster — including skip-a-pay, loan forbearance, and emergency financial support.

Eagle Community Credit Union, Frontwave Credit Union, LBS Financial Credit Union and San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) have expedited and highlighted their emergency personal loan programs to accommodate urgent requests. Nikkei Credit Union even streamlined its response by pointing members to its online automatic loan servicing portal, which features built-in forbearance tools.

Supporting Team Members

Nuvision Federal Credit Union, USC Credit Union, and Wescom Financial have all activated internal employee support initiatives.

Programs like Nuvision Cares provide financial grants for employees facing disaster-related costs, such as housing, food, medical expenses, transportation, or disaster recovery support, alongside an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) providing free, confidential 24-7 counseling.

USC Credit Union has prioritized direct and indirect support for its workforce, while Wescom Financial mobilized human resources support for affected team members and made emergency loans available internally.

As Southern California recovers from the scare in Garden Grove, local credit unions have engaged in full force — they continue to monitor the situation and have scaled their financial relief in real-time to guarantee no member is left behind.
