Driving Innovation, Supporting Staff, and Investing in Students

SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union remains committed to strengthening the connections between schools, educators, and the resources students need to succeed.

Through recent leadership transitions, university partnerships, and direct student investments, the credit union continues to champion educational excellence across all levels.

Leading the Charge for Classroom Innovation

Recently, Josh Smith, vice president of school and community relations at SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, was named chair of the Classroom of the Future Foundation (CFF) board of directors. CFF is a premier nonprofit that unites education, business, and community leaders to advance innovative learning environments in San Diego County schools.

Smith succeeds Dr. Leighangela Brady, the retired superintendent of National School District, following a collaborative, planned leadership transition.

“This organization shows what is possible when educators, business leaders, and community partners work together,” Smith said. “I look forward to collaborating with fellow board members and community leaders to support educators and create meaningful opportunities for students.”

Dr. Brady added, “Having worked closely with Josh, I know he brings a deep commitment to CFF’s mission and a collaborative approach that will serve the Foundation well.”

Supporting and Celebrating Higher Education Staff

SchoolsFirst’s dedication to education also extends to those who keep college campuses running.

The credit union recently established a five-year partnership with The University Foundation on behalf of Sacramento State, serving as the presenting sponsor for the Annual Staff Appreciation Picnic and the Staff Recognition and Service Awards.

“Our staff are at the heart of Sacramento State, and it was wonderful to come together to celebrate their dedication,” said Machelle Martin, vice president for People and Climate at Sacramento State. “We are grateful to SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union for their partnership.”

Smith echoed this sentiment: “Bringing people together and celebrating the education community is at the heart of what we do. It is our honor to recognize the hardworking staff at Sacramento State.”

Investing in the Next Generation of Leaders

SchoolsFirst is also investing in the academic futures of its members. The credit union recently awarded more than $200,000 in college scholarships to 245 students through its Member Education Award (MEA) program.

Originally established more than two decades ago, the MEA program helps cover the essential costs of tuition, books, and educational expenses. The latest cohort of recipients includes 167 high school seniors, 43 college freshmen, and 35 college sophomores, with the majority residing in California.

“For more than a quarter-century, the Member Education Award program has recognized students who demonstrate academic excellence, strong leadership, and a commitment to their communities,” said Smith. “The goal of these scholarships is to support these outstanding members as they work toward achieving their goals.”

To qualify, applicants must be SchoolsFirst members with no more than 60 college credits, enrolled at an accredited college or university. Recipients also have the opportunity to reapply each year they meet eligibility requirements, providing ongoing support throughout their early college years.
