George Whitesides: Fraud Prevention and Community Priorities

During this week’s advocacy visits with members of Congress on Capitol Hill, credit union leaders from California met with Rep. George Whitesides (CA-27) to advance consumer protection priorities, strengthen anti-fraud safeguards, and reinforce the role member-owned cooperatives play across Southern California communities.

The discussion focused on safeguarding consumers from scams, providing credit unions with modern statutory tools, and ensuring they can continue delivering affordable and reliable financial services to their members.

As scams grow in complexity with rapid technology advances and artificial intelligence (AI) usage, credit unions are urging Congress to equip financial institutions and law enforcement with the statutory backing needed to shield consumers. During the visit with Representative Whitesides and congressional offices, credit union leaders prioritized bipartisan anti-fraud measures.

These legislative discussions were reinforced by executive-branch regulatory meetings with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the White House National Economic Council, reflecting a collaborative approach to consumer safety and payment security.

This week’s meeting with Representative Whitesides comes after a recent in-district visit. In August, the congressman convened an affordable housing roundtable hosted at Logix Federal Credit Union in Valencia, in partnership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco. The gathering was attended by local leaders, housing developers, community organizations, and credit union leaders to tackle the region’s housing supply and affordability challenges.

By working collaboratively with members of Congress like Representative Whitesides on fraud prevention, workforce housing and regulatory modernization, credit union leaders continue to educate policymakers.
