Golden 1 CU Expands Student Support: Scholarships and More

As last year drew to a close, Golden 1 Credit Union (Golden 1) is doubling down on its commitment to California’s students by addressing two of the most significant hurdles to higher education: rising tuition costs and basic need insecurities. Through the launch of its 2026 Scholarship Program and a major Giving Tuesday donation to the California State University (CSU) system, the credit union is weaving a safety net designed to help students thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Removing Financial Barriers: The 2026 Scholarship Program

Building on a legacy of academic support, Golden 1 has officially opened applications for its 2026 Scholarship Program. The initiative offers California students the chance to earn renewable scholarships of up to $5,000 per year. For students entering a four-year program, this represents a potential total investment of $20,000 toward their degree.

In 2026 alone, Golden 1 expects to award approximately $500,000 in total scholarships. The program is open to high school seniors, graduates, and current college students (freshmen through juniors) who are Golden 1 members. To qualify, applicants must maintain a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate a commitment to their communities through at least 24 hours of service or work experience over the past year.

In a unique gesture of support, Golden 1 will also deposit $100 into a Share Savings account for every scholarship recipient, helping them jumpstart their financial journey alongside their academic one.

For students and families looking to take advantage of these opportunities, the scholarship application deadline is January 31, 2026. Winners will be notified and scholarships awarded in June 2026.

Combating Food Insecurity on Campus

While scholarships address the cost of enrollment, Golden 1 is also focused on the day-to-day survival of students. Coinciding with Giving Tuesday, the credit union announced a $100,000 donation specifically to support food and basic needs programs across all 23 CSU campuses.

The necessity of this gift is underscored by staggering data from the California Student Aid Commission, which reveals that two out of three college students in California experience food insecurity. By funding campus food pantries, Golden 1 aims to ensure that hunger does not become a barrier to graduation.

“Food insecurity remains a significant barrier for many college students working toward their educational goals, and we are honored to help strengthen this vital support system,” said Erica Taylor, Senior Vice President of Community Impact and Public Relations Officer for Golden 1 Credit Union. “CSU food pantries play an essential role in ensuring students can focus on their studies without the burden of hunger.”

A Legacy of Community Impact

These two initiatives are part of a much larger philanthropic footprint. Since 2013, Golden 1 has awarded nearly $5 million in scholarships to approximately 600 students. Similarly, its support for food security is long-standing; since 2012, the credit union has contributed nearly $900,000 to food banks throughout the state.

“This program invests directly in California students and Golden 1 members, helping them reach their full potential while strengthening the communities we serve,” Taylor added. “We’re proud to support the next generation of leaders and changemakers by expanding opportunities in higher education.”
