Provident Credit Union’s mission is to champion its members’ financial wellbeing and enrich the community through exceptional service. That mission goes beyond products and accounts; it’s about human connection, meaningful partnerships, and making a lasting impact.
This month, the credit union was honored to partner with the Oakland Literacy Coalition to further that mission in action.
The Oakland Literacy Coalition works tirelessly toward a vision in which every Oakland child learns and loves to read. Through school-library partnerships, reading-everywhere programs, book distributions, and advocacy for equitable access to books, OLC supports students, families, and educators across Oakland.
Provident’s team of volunteers helped organize four classroom libraries, distribute 250-plus pencil cases assembled by the management team, and helped prepare materials for a new curriculum designed to encourage independent reading.
By doing this hands-on work, the credit union helped free up educators and librarians to focus more of their energy on teaching, mentoring, and engaging young readers while its volunteer team members rolled up their sleeves and worked behind the scenes.
Why this matters:
A well-organized, welcoming library space helps spark curiosity and invites reading.
When students see books arranged with care and find themselves drawn to pick one up, the credit union helps build a positive reading habit.
Investing time in literacy supports not only academic success but long-term economic and social well-being, values that directly align with Provident’s commitment to community enrichment and member-financial wellness.
Volunteer service fosters employee engagement and deepens the credit union’s connection to the neighborhoods it serves.
Provident believes that being a trusted local financial institution means more than banking. It means being a partner in the lives of the credit union’s members and neighbors. Volunteering with the Oakland Literacy Coalition is a tangible expression of Provident’s brand promise: delivering high-quality products and services, and giving back to the community in a meaningful way.
The credit union wants to extend a big “thank you” to OLC for the invitation to serve and to the credit union’s team for stepping forward. As Provident continues to grow and innovate, it remains committed to being an institution of choice not only for banking, but for community impact.
For those interested in supporting literacy in Oakland, the credit union encourages members of the community to learn more about the Oakland Literacy Coalition and how they can contribute, whether through volunteering, donating books, or promoting reading in their own networks. When every child learns and loves to read, the whole community thrives.
