In a significant development in the California State Legislature on Monday, the Senate Democratic Caucus held a vote to select its next president pro tempore.
As anticipated, Sen. Monique Limón secured the necessary support and was elected to lead the California State Senate, succeeding current President Pro Tem Mike McGuire.
Limón, who was elected to the California State Senate in 2020 following her service in the Assembly, has held key leadership roles in both houses, including chairing the banking committees. Her election is historic — she will be the first Latina and first woman of color to serve as leader of the Senate.
While the timeline for the transition remains unclear, it is expected to take place in early 2026.
Additional details, including potential changes to committee assignments, are forthcoming.
