Politico Influence reporter Caitlin Oprysko sat down with incoming America’s Credit Unions President and CEO Scott Simpson at Congressional Caucus for a one-on-one interview to discuss his plans for the organization.
The interview highlights his priorities for credit unions, an industry he says “has had to struggle for its existence and survival from the very beginning.” He emphasized that the “No. 1 priority is to try to defend and enhance a business model” by protecting the industry’s tax status during the budget reconciliation process.
Simpson currently serves as president and CEO of Fuel Solutions, leading California’s Credit Unions, Nevada’s Credit Unions and Utah’s Credit Unions until November 3, where he championed a unique, cross-state partnership model designed to maximize collaboration while maintaining strong, state-level leadership. With more than two decades of proven leadership in credit union advocacy, public policy, and organizational strategy, he will step into his new role in November with deep experience and a strong track record of advancing a unified credit union movement across multiple states and on the national stage.
Under his direction, credit unions in California, Nevada, and Utah navigated complex political environments, strengthened their advocacy efforts, and expanded their reach to better serve diverse communities. He also led the establishment of Fuel Solutions, a nonprofit support organization for state trade associations.
In addition to the tax status, Simpson also stressed the need to prevent interchange provisions from being included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) during the interview, as well as reducing regulatory burdens and ensuring credit unions have a stable, independent regulator.
