State CRA Bill Passes CA Assembly; Stay Tuned for Next Steps

On Tuesday, California Assemblymember Mia Bonta presented Assembly Bill 801 on the floor for a vote — the state Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) bill.

The presentation was brief, and there was no debate. This is an expected occurrence given the volume of legislation being considered this past week.

AB 801 passed with 43 “aye” votes, surpassing the 40 votes needed for passage. While assemblymembers may still change or add their votes, the California Credit Union League does not anticipate a significant increase in the final tally.

Although passage is not the outcome the League hoped for, it was anticipated given that AB 801 is a priority bill for the California Legislative Black Caucus. The League’s primary objective was to keep the “aye” count as low as possible, which was successfully achieved.

“Thank you to everyone who engaged on this issue via Connect For The Cause and who made calls in opposition,” said Robert Wilson, senior vice president of state government affairs for the California Credit Union League and Nevada’s Credit Unions. “Your efforts made a difference.”
