U.S. Senate Confirms John Crews to Serve on the NCUA Board

Today, the Senate voted to confirm John Crews to serve on the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) board.

Following his confirmation, Crews will be sworn in and begin serving as an NCUA board member for a term that runs through August 2031. While he will immediately assume his role as a board member, his confirmation does not automatically make him NCUA Board Chair. The chair is designated by the President, and President Trump is expected to make that designation after Crews is sworn into office.

Prior to serving on the NCUA board, Crews served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions Policy at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Previously, he served as a policy advisor to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, where he covered economic and financial services policy. He also served as Policy Director for the Senate Banking Committee and, during the first Trump Administration, as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy on the National Economic Council.

California’s and Nevada’s Credit Unions, along with credit union leaders from California and Nevada, were honored to meet with Crews during America’s Credit Unions’ Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Washington, D.C., this past March while he served as Treasury Deputy Assistant Secretary. That meeting provided an early opportunity to discuss key regulatory priorities and operational challenges facing credit unions in California while establishing an important line of communication ahead of his transition to the NCUA.

During his June 25 confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Crews outlined several priorities he would bring to the agency, including:

  • Maintaining the safety and soundness of the credit union system.
  • Preparing the NCUA for technological innovation, including artificial intelligence and digital assets, with the goal of enhancing member service.
  • Supporting the formation and success of de novo credit unions.

Crews succeeds Kyle Hauptman, whose six-year term expired in August 2025. The board will continue to operate with one sitting member, as the remaining two board seats are currently vacant while former NCUA board members Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka continue to challenge their April 2025 dismissal.

We congratulate John Crews on his confirmation and look forward to working with him as the NCUA continues its important mission of ensuring a safe, sound, and vibrant credit union system. We appreciate his willingness to engage with the credit union industry and look forward to maintaining a constructive and collaborative working relationship in the years ahead.
