Washing Historic Aircraft at Aerospace Museum of California

SAFE Credit Union employees recently came together at the Aerospace Museum of California to wash and preserve historic aircraft displayed across the museum’s open-air air park.

The service day was spearheaded by VALOR (Veterans and Loved Ones Resource), SAFE Credit Union’s employee resource group supporting active-duty military members, veterans, and their families. The volunteer group took on the heavy labor required to clean and protect vintage military and civilian aircraft from outdoor weather wear and Sacramento Valley dust.

The aircraft washed included iconic legends such as the Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog,” a Vietnam-era Douglas A-1E Skyraider, and a Sikorsky CH-3E “Jolly Green Giant” helicopter, according to local news reports.

Museum President and CEO Tom Jones underscored the impact of the effort, noting that caring for multi-ton, full-scale aircraft requires continuous upkeep. The nonprofit museum relies heavily on community volunteers to maintain the historical fleet for future generations.

The project carries deep significance for the Sacramento-based credit union. SAFE was originally founded in 1940 as Sacramento Air Depot Federal Credit Union to serve Army Air Corps personnel and civil service workers at what later became McClellan Air Force Base.

By returning to McClellan Park to care for aircraft tied to that legacy, SAFE’s VALOR group honored their founding military roots while embodying the “people helping people” philosophy.
